The 89 species of chameleons live in jungles like Madagascar and Africa, south of the Sahara. Two types of chameleon occur in western Asia, one in southern India and Sri Lanka and the European chameleon which lives in the Near East westward along the North Africa Coast and into southern coastal Spain.
Chameleon skin is a layer and under the layer are cells with guanine crystals. Chameleons change the color of their skin by adjusting the space between the guanine crystals, which changes the wavelength of light reflected off the crystals. Chameleons usually eat large insects such as locusts, grasshoppers, crickets, andstick insects, some bigger species also eat other lizards and young birds.
