Feeling run down? Or like you can't get everything you need to do done in one day? Then shut off the internet! This weekend, our internet went down on Friday night and stayed down until Sunday afternoon. So what happened? I had a great weekend, that's what!
Let me explain. At my house, the internet is our connection to the outside world. I do not want my daughters wasting time watching TV all day, so we do not subscribe to cable or any other type of TV. I will buy DVDs for my daughters to watch...but at least they aren't bombarded with all of the stupid commercials, and I have more control over what they actually watch. Although the internet has a lot of garbage on it as well, I find that my little one can't find that stuff yet, and while my older daughter can, she usually prefers to talk with and message her friends instead. I use the internet for both work and entertainment. What I find is that it can be a gigantic time waster. Even when I want to get a lot done, I find that I will kill 20 or 30 minutes sometimes just peeling the onion (my term for reading one article and then clicking a link to a related article). Thus, when the internet went down and stayed down, I had a lot of time free up in my schedule! Note, too, that I refuse to get a "smart" phone. I had one in the early years when they first came out, and I felt that once the great unwashed got them, they would cease to be as useful as they once were. For me that is true! Although most people seem to not be able to live without them now. So what did I do this weekend? A better question would be what DIDN'T I do! On Saturday morning, Maddie and I went to our usual karate class and grabbed a coffee afterward at McDonald's. We then ran home, grabbed lunch and Ashleigh and went to a matinee at the local movie theater. Originally, it was going to be an Ashleigh and Daddy day, but we expanded it to include Maddie (note that there are Maddie and Daddy days too). We saw "Home", which is an age appropriate movie for Ashleigh and we all had a good time. We then ran to the park for a couple of hours of play. Ashleigh loves to make new friends there. After that, we went home, had dinner as a family, played with Ashleigh a little bit and then watched a couple of DVDs before bed. Sunday, oddly enough, was a day of work, After church we ran an errand, grabbed some coffee and then shot home. After lunch I added salt to our water system, mowed the lawn, took the plow off of my truck, fixed my canoe and cleaned the garage. A full day if I do say so myself. Now, would I have done all of that stuff if the internet was working? To be honest, probably. It would have just taken me much longer since I likely would have sat down at some point and checked my emails. All said, it was a great weekend without the internet! Try it sometime. See if you are more productive. I know I was!
