Today, as a side post, I posted my manifesto for life. My tenth and last rule for life was "Love yourself", which I considered to be the greatest and most important rule on my list. Here, I'd like to elaborate on that rule. Using the same quote I used in my manifesto: "Before you expect someone else to love you, you must first love yourself." It makes sense- if YOU can't even love yourself as the person you are, how can you expect someone else to do what you yourself cannot?
When it comes down to it, you know yourself better than anyone else. You know your own mind and body, and you KNOW your flaws. There is no way around it. No one can go through life oblivious to their flaws... however, as you grow older, it seems to become easier and easier to go through life oblivious to your own GOOD POINTS as well. EVERYONE has a gift, or something good and special about them- and I don't care WHO you are. For me? I happen to be a gifted baker and exceptional at karate. On the side, I have an easy time making people laugh and am known to be the joker in my group of friends. I try to not ignore my flaws, but not single them out either. I work on them in my own time, but choose not to dwell on them. I am often seen as a pessimist- someone who looks upon everything through a negative lens. However, this is far from the truth. I may SEEM pessimistic just because of how I talk, but my mind is actually quite optimistic. Just today, my best friend told me to stop always assuming that the worst is going to happen. I don't assume the worst- I just prepare myself for the worst. There is a big difference. The one time I DIDN'T expect the worst to happen, it did... so dwelling on the positive is not always a good thing because there is a lot more let-down. You have to be realistic with yourself. You know your flaws- no one is perfect, but that doesn't give you any right to give up and not work on improving yourself. There are ALWAYS improvements to be made on everyone, and who knows- maybe by improving yourself, you will also improve the lives of those around you. Maddie
