Ever had a regret? I've had a few...but then again, too few to mention. Alright, stop singing old Frank Sinatra songs! Of course I have had regrets. Everyone has. The trick is not to let regrets ruin the rest of your life. A regret usually pops up when you are uncertain whether or not you did everything you could in a certain situation. Or it is due to you being uncertain that the things you did do were the right things to do. If you are really unlucky, your regrets are tied to both feelings simultaneously.
That's where I sit with a couple of issues. Unfortunately, I will never know the answers. So what do I do? I try to go on and live my life and not dwell on the past. Even so, I don't forget my past, I just try to use it to live a better life going forward. Regret is your mind telling you that maybe if you did something differently, what happened might have changed. This is not always the case though...particularly when your regrets involve other people. Each and every one of us have decisions to make. If the decisions made by others had a large impact on the outcome, then almost anything that you would have done may not have made a difference. I believe the best rule I have in life is to treat people how I would like to be treated. I try to make decisions based on this principle. Sometimes, decisions have to be made to protect others as well. The worst thing you can do is shy away from making a tough decision if others are going to be hurt by your inaction. Looking ahead, I hope I never have to make any decisions that lead to life or death situations. If I do, then I plan to make the best decision I can under the circumstances.
