I believe that this is a question that many could learn from, if it were asked often enough. Many people learn lessons yearly, but seldom take the time to look back on what they've learned and reflect on it, so that it may help them in the future. The lesson I have learned in the past year is quite important to me, so I'd like to share it with my readers in hopes that they can learn from it as well. As always, my sister and my dad are challenged to follow this prompt as well.
The most important lesson that I've learned this year is that if someone is bringing negativity to my life... I have the power to remove them from my life. In the past, I'll admit that I've let toxic and negative people stay in my life far longer than they should have for the fear of hurting them. I always fear hurting others, or being perceived as mean. It goes hand in hand with my over-forgiveness. It's taken me a long time to realize this, but I finally have: if someone is mistreating me, and clearly not caring about hurting me... why should I care about hurting them? Besides, when I do finally cut people out of my life, I try to not burn bridges. In a metaphorical sense, rather, I let the bridge become abandoned and decay from a lack of upkeep. I try not to machete people out of my life, though I unfortunately had to recently due to a rather extreme situation. The bottom line is that if someone is bringing negativity to your life, you have every right to remove them from it. No one has a RIGHT to be in your life, and particularly not if they're going to treat you with disrespect. I think a good point from this lesson is knowing that you really don't owe anyone anything if you remove them from your life. If they've continually mistreated you, you don't owe them an explanation for why they're no longer in your life. Their own actions should tell them that. The last thing you owe them is an apology. Forgiveness and apologizing are two entirely different things- don't say sorry for the consequence of someone else's mistakes. - Maddie
