1972... I was just turning six and I was in the first grade at Holy Family school in Union City, New Jersey. I was a narrator for the class play, along with Michelle Burke, probably because we were the best readers in the class. Sister Moira was our teacher, and I remember we had to wear ties and uniforms to school. It was the early 1970's and I was oblivious to all of the social changes taking place, and all of the really cool cars that were being made in Detroit. My Dad, I remember, had a Galaxy 500. It was teal, and a vast improvement over the 1950's era Ford Fairlane he had owned just the year before. He got rid of it after the back door flew open around a turn and I nearly fell out. My sister saved me that day by grabbing a hold of me as I slowly slid toward the open door. There were no seat belts in those old cars! By the way, Thanks Michelle! A little late, but better late than never! Anyway, I bring that up to tell you what I was doing at that time. Half a continent a way, in Detroit, a new Buick Centurion convertible was rolling off of the production line. It was one of only 2,396 Centurion convertibles produced that year. Over the years, the car has had three owners and racked up about 89,000 miles on its odometer. I am now its fourth owner.
All in all, the car has been taken care of very well over the years. The last owner had the interior redone in leather (an option that was not available for the car in 1972) and also did work on the brakes and exhaust. New tires and rims have also been placed on the car, and the convertible top had been replaced within the last ten years or so. Currently, I am changing out the exhaust manifolds and the battery cables. The exhaust manifolds had a hole that made the engine louder than it should be. Given the age of the engine, they do not make replacement parts for the vehicle, so I had to hunt down used parts through eBay and classic car sites. The parts were available and I am currently waiting for them to arrive by UPS.
In the Spring, I am planning to have the car repainted, and possibly change the convertible top from its current black to white to match the interior. I have always wanted a classic car, and I am thinking of having this one painted like a Hot Wheel! We have a local car show that runs every Wednesday night during the summer, and I am looking forward to showing off my treasure next season. All said, I am really excited about my classic muscle car. Looking ahead, I will update you on my progress with the car from time to time.

Today I read a new book called ''The Bailey School Kids: Sea Monsters Don't Ride Motorcycles.'' One day Melody, Eddie, Lisa, and Howie were in Sheldon city watching motorcycles. Once the winner took off her helmet Eddie got a surprise. The winner was a girl named Jessie. After 5 or 10 minutes of cheering, they went to the beach and made a sand castle.
Jessie helped with the sea monster that Eddie was trying to make. She even told them a true story about sea monsters. That made Howie think that Jessie was a sea monster. The next day at the motorcycle race, a new racer was on the track. It beat Jessie. When the new winner pulled off her helmet, everyone gasped. The new winner was Eddie's grandmother. Ashleigh Hello, and apologies for the break I took from writing last week! It was my first week settling in with all of my courses for the first half of my school year, so my schedule was a bit thrown off as I was trying to figure out how I'd set up my schedule for the year. In the first half of the year, I've been saddled with Biology, Algebra II, Intro to Communications, American Politics, English Composition I, and starting in November, Intro to Criminal Justice.
Three of those five courses are college courses, with heavier workloads and a lot more reading than your average high school class. However, I find them to be easier- because even though the work I'm doing is more advanced, there's less of it. An average high school VLACs course has about 60-65 assignments. An average SNHU course has 20-30 assignments. The SNHU courses are shorter, and I appreciate it. My hardest course so far is Algebra II- and not just because I absolutely despise mathematics. There are approximately 130 assignments to complete, and even though they're mostly in the form of quizzes... it's a bit of an overload. So, I spent last week submitting bunches of assignments, PARTICULARLY for Algebra, to try and get ahead of what I know will be a busy schedule. In my first week I've already had a heavy workload, and in a few months I'll be adding another course. I need to be ready for the overlap of work. However, last week was the only exception to my lack of blog posts and I'll be on top of them from here on out. The following few will likely be on the side-blog (The Letters) and will be following the prompt challenge I'm doing. Thanks for the understanding, Maddie There are over 10,000 different species of grasshoppers found on every continent except for Antarctica. Some live in jungles and forests. Grasshoppers are eaten by raccoons, big brown bats, and red foxes. Grasshoppers hatch out of eggs. The eggs are long and thin.
Grasshoppers never eat other insects. They are called herbivores, because they eat only plants. They will eat the grass in your yard. They will also eat the crops you have in your field. Ashleigh Today I read a new book called ''The Bailey School Kids: Dragons Don't Cook Pizza.'' One day, Eddie, Liza, Howie, and Melody were going into the newest pizza place in town. Before they had even one bite, they bumped into the owner. "I am George", he said. He led them to the dining room and gave them pizza.
Just then, smoke filled the room. Noise filled the hall. It sounded like a dragon. That was when Howie told them a story about a knight that could control a dragon. His name was George. That night, they sneaked into the pizza place and found out that there was no dragon. The next day, they were happy because they got to go to the pizza place and eat a big cheesy pizza. Ashleigh Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo aren't made up names. They are names of artists. For example, Leonardo da Vinci. His famous work of art was a painting of Mona Lisa. Ashleigh
Today I read a new book called ''Magic Tree House: Monday With a Mad Genius.'' One Monday morning Jack and Annie were on their way to their new school. Then Annie told Jack that she saw the tree house. When he heard that, he ran into the woods and didn't stop until he got to the tree house. Annie did the same.
Teddy and Kathleen were waiting for them. They needed to go to Florence, Italy to get the secret of happiness. They needed to help a man named Leonardo DaVinci. He was working on a painting that he called a fresco. When he tried to not melt the painting with the fire, it melted. Sad, Leonardo walked away. Jack and Annie tried to cheer him up. they even used the wand to make his arms into wings. It worked. the secret of happiness was found. Then they went back to the tree house, and went home. Ashleigh Dolphins are mammals that eat a lot of different foods. Some of them eat fish, while others eat squid. They live in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Dolphins mating seasons are throughout the year. Though in some areas dolphins do it in the fall and spring.
It usually takes 9-17 mouths until birth, depending on the species. Dolphins jump out of the water to avoid predators. They also do it to catch there breaths. I like Dolphins. Ashleigh Peacocks are large, colorful birds that have blue and green tail feathers. These tail feathers spread out in a train. Blue, gold, and red eye markings cover its train. The large train is used for mating and blending in with their environment. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, and color.
Peacocks eat insects, plants, and small creatures. There are two familiar peacock species. The blue peacock lives in India and Sri Lanka. The green peacock is found in Java and Myanmar Burma. Peacocks are pretty. Ashleigh I was searching for prompts as I have 5 posts to write today, and I found a list of prompts that are meant to be done in order. This idea originally came from Tumblr, and the gist of it is that every day, you write an online letter to whatever person that day is assigned to. I may get a bit ahead of myself with this one since I have 5 posts to catch up, but I'm going to attempt to tackle this challenge head on and I invite anyone who'd like to join me to leave a post submission in the contact form on the 'Contact' page of this blog. I'll be setting up a page for these letters separate from this post, but I just wanted to go over things here first.
These letters aren't specific- they can say whatever you want them to. The idea is to express your emotions and feelings for whoever you're addressing the letter to. No direct names are meant to be used. If you're going to submit a post, I ask you keep profanity out of your letter... along with downright hate. I'm not trying to promote violence or distaste for anyone. This is a peaceful challenge- not that I expect to get any submissions, anyway. Better to put out guidelines before starting, just in case. In any case, I'll keep this intro post short and sweet as I now have to go design a new page on the blog for the challenge. I'll have four new posts written there in the very near future :) - Maddie |
