Earlier today, I was on tumblr scrolling around and link-surfing. I came across a comic strip while looking, and I thought it conveyed a really deep message... so I wanted to share it (along with my interpretation of it) with readers. The title of the comic is 'We Go Forward', and it comes from (don't laugh) OwlTurd Comics. I saw it through a reblog on Tumblr and I thought it was a great representation of how most parents want more for their children than they had for themselves. The comics show a pixel adventurer, trying to advance in what's assumed to be a platform game. The adventurer finds he can't cross a large gap in the map, and so he sits still where he is and slowly builds a house for himself.
A female adventurer comes along, and then it's shown that the two have a child. In the comic, as the child grows, the father can be seen teaching the child to jump- trying to prepare the child for the gap outside their home when the time comes. The father wants the child to be able to achieve what he could not, and reach the other side of the gap... and continue on. Soon enough, the child is grown... and able to make the jump across the gap. As the child makes the jump, she exclaims that she did it to her parents. Upon landing on the other side of the gap, she realizes that it is impossible to go back. I feel like this is such a great metaphor for life. Your parents encounter struggles within their lives, and then try to best prepare you for those struggles within your own life. They want you to be able to succeed where they could not. You learn to surpass their struggles, but in doing so, you get too caught up within your own life... and then you realize that no matter how much you want to, you can't go back. Even all the preparation in the world cannot make up lost time, and I think that's the message of this comic. It's a representation of the struggles of a parent preparing their kids for life, only to lose them to time... and I think it's pretty damn amazing. - Maddie
